Product Description

Product Description:The Dichroic Mirror is a very precise color filter used to selectively transmit light in a small range of colors while reflecting other colors. In contrast, dichroic mirrors and dichroic mirrors tend to be characterized by the color of the light they reflect, rather than the color they pass through.

Dichroic mirrors filter light from a white light source to produce light of a highly saturated (intense) color that is perceived by humans. Dichroic mirrors are often used behind light sources to reflect visible light forward, while allowing invisible infrared light (radiant heat) to pass through the back of the fixture, resulting in a literally cooler (lower thermal temperature) beam. This arrangement allows a given light to significantly increase its forward intensity while allowing heat generated by the rearward portion of the fixture to escape.

Features:
Dichroic mirrors use the principle of thin-film interference and produce color in the same way that oil films on water do. When light strikes the oil film at an angle, some light is reflected from the top surface of the oil, and some light is reflected from the bottom surface in contact with the water. Because light reflected from the bottom travels a slightly longer path, this delay enhances some wavelengths of light and cancels others, resulting in the color seen.

Product advantages:
1) Better filtering characteristics than traditional dichroic mirrors
2) Can easily make a dichroic mirror to pass any passband frequency and block a selected amount of stopband frequencies (saturation)
3) Since the light in the blocking band is reflected rather than absorbed, the dichroic mirror produces much less heat than conventional filters
4) Longer life than regular filters, the color is inherent in the construction of the hard microscope layer and cannot be "bleached" over the life of the filter (unlike e.g. gel filters)
5) Dichroic mirrors will not melt or deform except at very high temperatures (hundreds of degrees Celsius)
6) Ability to achieve extremely high laser damage thresholds (dichroism is used in all mirrors of the most powerful lasers in the world)

Applications:
1) In fluorescence microscopy, a dichroic mirror is used as a beam splitter to illuminate the excitation frequency to the sample and then at the analyzer to exclude the same excitation frequency but pass a specific emission frequency.
2) Some LCD projectors use dichroic mirrors instead of prisms to split the white light from the bulb into three colors before passing through three LCD units.
3) Used as a laser harmonic separator. The various harmonic components of frequency-doubled laser systems are separated by selective spectral reflection and transmission.
4) Dichroic mirrors are also used to create patterns for high power lighting products. The picture is made by overlapping four colored dichroic mirrors.
5) The photo amplifier color head uses a dichroic mirror to adjust the color balance in printing.
