Product Description:Polarizing filters are often placed in front of camera lenses for photography to darken the sky or suppress glare from lakes or seas. Since reflections tend to be at least partially linearly polarized, linear polarizers can be used to alter the balance of light in a photo. Adjust the rotation of the filter according to the preferred artistic effect. For modern cameras, circular polarizers are often used, which consist first of a linear polarizer, followed by a quarter-wave plate, which converts linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light before entering the camera. This additional step avoids problems with autofocus and light metering sensors in the camera.

There are two types of polarizing filters readily available, linear and "circular":
1. A "circular" polarizing photographic filter consists of a linear polarizer on the front and a quarter wave plate on the back. A quarter wave plate converts the selected polarized light into circularly polarized light within the camera. This applies to all types of cameras because mirrors and beam splitters separate circularly polarized light the same way they separate unpolarized light.
2. Linear polarizing filters can be easily distinguished from circular polarizers. In a linear polarizing filter, the polarizing effect comes into play no matter which side the scene is viewed from (rotate to see the difference). In a "circular" polarizing filter, the polarizing effect works when viewing the scene from the male (back) side of the filter, but not when looking backwards.

The advantage of polarizing filters is consistency in digital or cinematography. While software postprocessing can simulate many other types of filters, photographs do not record light polarization, so the effects of controlling polarization at exposure cannot be replicated in software.
