Product Description:Dichroic mirrors are the most common instrument used to verify birefringence. As the name suggests, a dichroic mirror is an instrument used to check the dichroic nature of a gemstone. Since only birefringent stones have bichromaticity, if the bichromaticity is detected, the test will prove that the stone is birefringent. If a birefringent gemstone is not detected, there are two cases: it may be a mono-refractive gemstone, or it may be a birefringent gemstone, but its bichromaticity is too weak.

When normal white light passes through a birefringent stone, it is broken up into two beams of light that oscillate vertically with each other. The calcite in the dichroic mirror is the most birefringent mineral in nature. It separates the two beams of light coming out of the stone, and then projects them into two different areas by means of the optical reflection guide in the dichroic mirror.

However, in some cases, even when observing a mono-refractive stone, the color of the two windows may appear slightly different due to reflection, scattering, or other reasons, making it difficult to distinguish between a mono-refractive stone and a weakly birefringent stone. If the difference in color is very small, it is not necessary to confirm the birefringence of the stone by other means.
