In the range of 2-12μm, germanium is the most commonly used material for fabrication of optical lenses and optical Windows in efficient infrared imaging systems. Germanium is characterized by a high refractive index (about 4.0 in the 2-14μm band), minimal surface curvature, and small chromatic aberration, and is usually not required to be corrected in low-power imaging systems.
