Product Description:In a laser beam expander, the position of the objective and imaging lens is reversed. Kepler-style beam expanders are designed so that the collimated input beam is concentrated at a point between the objective and the imaging lens, creating an area where laser energy is focused (Figure 1). The points in this concentration heat the air between the lenses, refracting the light in the light path, which can cause wavefront errors. In high-power laser applications, the ionization of air at the focal point can also be a problem. In view of this, most beam expanders choose to use a Galileo design or its variant (Figure 2). However, Kepler-style designs are still very useful in laser applications that require spatial filtering, as they provide a focal point for easy placement of spatial filters.

Laser beam expanders have two main uses: one is to extend the diameter of the laser beam; The second is to reduce the divergence angle of the laser beam. Therefore, it is used for long-distance illumination or projection, as well as for focusing systems.

The divergence angle of a beam of light being expanded changes inversely proportional to the expansion ratio. The expanded beam can be focused smaller than an unexpanded beam. The magnification of the laser beam expansion collimator is the magnification of the beam diameter. The product of the spot size and divergence angle of the laser beam output from the laser is optically invariant and is approximated to a certain value. When the beam waist radius is expanded by x times, the divergence angle is correspondingly compressed to the original 1/x, and the compression divergence angle is actually the collimation of the laser. Compressing the divergence angle does not improve the beam quality, which is the product of the beam waist radius and the divergence angle; The compression of the divergence angle will be accompanied by an increase in the radius of the girdle, and the size of the spot will increase. Laser marking machines are often used in conjunction with a field-focused lens.
